school and our community to have this level of involvement in extra-curricular

Raffle to Raise Money for State Competition Fund Basketball fans this winter will see the return of
the Great Grizzly Raffle fund raising event as a huge assortment of prizes will
be collected and distributed to lucky raffle ticket holders immediately after
the last home basketball game. The event has historically been one of the
cubs most lucrative and popular fund raising events. And after it was
confirmed by the school administration that there was no money budgeted for
regional and state athletic competitions, it was passed unanimously at the last
Booster Club meeting that all proceeds of the Great Grizzly Raffle would be
placed in a Booster Club "Regional and State Competition Fund". The school
currently has no money to send the boys Cross-country team and Terece Hahn from
the girl's Cross-country team to the state competition. With this new and
very important purpose in mind, all Booster Club members are called upon to
donate raffle items and solicit raffle items from companies and businesses where
you work and shop. We also need members to pick up books of tickets and
sell as many tickets as possible to neighbors, friends, relatives and
co-workers. If you would like to donate prizes, solicit prizes, sell
tickets or buy tickets please contact any booster club officer or
call Karen Cunningham. Plans for 2007 Car Show Announced Mark your calendars now for Saturday, September 15th, 2007 and plan to attend the 2nd annual Booster Club Open Auto Car Show. The first annual event last September was such a great success that the Booster Club wasted no time in arranging the 2007 event. Over 30 cars were entered vying for trophies in 12 different categories including a special "Best of Show" award that was won in 2006 by Keith Hvaartson. David Bradbury provided an excellent musical assortment of 50's and 60's classics that kept people rocking and dancing all day. Support from our sponsors was overwhelming and included: Seebers Pharmacy, Owens Grocery, Bruce Hunt Farmers Insurance, Pizza Factory, POVN.com, Newport Ambulance, Perfection Tire and Roger's Auto Body and Frame. A very special thanks to Roger McCarthy from Deer Park for all his help in teaching the club "How to Put on a Car Show". Booster Club members Dan and Terri Lowry, Karen Cunningham and Family, Bubba and Tammi Scott and Family, Dalene Zieske and Family, Debbie Vogel and Family and Joanne and Ashley Tate are to be congratulated for producing an event of this caliber. Come Meet Your Grizzlies Join the Booster Club when we host the second "Meet the Grizzlies" event at 6 pm on Monday, November 20th in the high school gym and cafeteria. The winter sports teams: boy's and girl's basketball and wrestling team will be there to run drills and show off their skills. Coaches will be available for questions and a free spaghetti dinner will be served by Booster Club members to all who are present. During the meal it is hoped to have several guest speakers. If you would like to help cook, serve or have further questions, please contact Debbie Vogel at 447-1134. Maws and Paws Booster Club Newsletter October 2006
BOOSTER CLUB OBTAINS INDEPENDENT STATUS In May, the Maws and Paws booster Club applied for and received its Federal identification Number, registered its trade name and received a business number from the state of Washington. It is also in the process of completing a 17 page application which will determine them as a 501(c) non-profit organization. This was all brought about after a study by members of the Booster Club and Tere Von Marbod, school Superintendent, that determined organizing the Maws and Paws Booster Club as an arm of ASB was actually in violation of Washington state law. According to the State, any club under the auspices of ASB must allow students to vote upon any expenditures of money. Since Booster Club is a parent organization and does not involve students in budget decisions, it was agreed by all parties involved that the Booster Club should make efforts to open their own bank account and register itself as an independent organization. Even though it is now its own separate entity, the goals remain the same and it will continue to support extra-curricular programs at the high school and middle school levels. Betz Awarded for Distinguished Service Molly Betz was presented the first ever Maws and Paws booster Club Distinguished Service award at the 8th grade promotion ceremony last June. Her many hours devoted to extra-curricular activities during all four of her middle school years as well as the volunteer efforts of her parents gave her the highest point total of all students who applied. As the award recipient, she not only received an engraved plaque but also earned a free 2006-2007 Grizzly Family Pass for her entire family. The award was initiated by the Booster Club to reward middle school students for their contributions to extra-curricular activities. To qualify for the award, students must be enrolled in the 8th grade at Sadie Halstead Middle School with the intentions of attending Newport High School and must have participated in at least four extra-curricular activities during their middle school years. Applications for the 2007 award will be available in April. '06-'07 Officers Elected New officers were elected during the May meeting and
are as follows: President, Debbie Vogel; First Vice President, Karen
Cunningham; Second Vice President, Mark "Bubba" Scott' Secretary, Candy Betz and
Treasurer, Dalene Zieske. Board members shall be announced as they are
appointed. New Fall Activity Programs Now Available The Booster Club will be publishing exciting seasonal
programs that feature pictures of all the Newport sport teams, comments from the
coaches, as well as individual pictures of participating senior athletes.
Each issue will also highlight several school clubs or organizations. The
fall issue is now available and the focus is on Football, Cross-country,
Volleyball, ASB and Pep Band. These high quality programs are a must for
your scrap books and make great gifts to send to those out-of-town family
members. The may be purchased at the Booster Club table for $2.00. A
special thanks to those club members who helped put the fall program
together: Kevin and Lin Su Bush, Tammi Scott, Kim Ralston, Karen
Cunningham and Marige Zickler. Club Membership Up Over 100% Booster Club membership so far this year has sky-rocketed over last year's numbers.
